started out, but it certainly seems way before it became all the rage to grow anything yourself,
especially 'upside down'.
Even though I've been interested in the idea of food coming out of your own garden, ever since
childhood, I just never seemed to get going on it for myself. Sure, Mom was always trying to get me
interested (and tempted me with all her meal-time goodie-jars whenever she came to stay with us)
but again, I just didn't feel I had what it took to grow my own food.
For a start, I thought it sounded like hard work
- and that was something I knew I had plenty of
already!
Well, in a way, for me it was hard work at the start. Getting all those elusive 'puzzle-pieces'
neatly arranged over those first difficult years was a real labor of love. My husband thought I was
crazy. But now, where I finally know I'm in for a bumper crop of juicy tomatoes, every single
season, guess what?
He doesn't think I'm quite so crazy any more!
(and I've even got him happily helping me on the
weekends with my latest projects).
I Am A Hobby Gardener - And I Have A Life Outside My Garden Too!
Even though I know that store-bought tomatoes are expensive and taste bad (well, let me be honest,
they don't really taste of anything at all any more) I still used to buy them. I always hoped I'd
strike it lucky, and find the good ones I thought I remembered from some time before. I even stopped
buying the 'usual' ones, and only ever got the fancy ones with the stalks still on them.
It made no difference at all!
Well, that's not true - it made my purse cry out in pain - ouch! Those prices
just weren't friendly.
And they sure haven't gotten any friendlier over the years, have they?
So one day, about 10 years ago now, I set out to change it all.
I drove to my local garden center, bought 6 tomato plants, got home, and planted them in the sunny
part of my back garden, right there in the dirt, next to the rose bush.
It Marked The Beginning of My Journey to Tomato Success
I'd love to tell you now that that they were the best tomatoes I'd ever tasted, and about how
envious my friends were, but that would be a downright lie. You see, I'm a bit hot-headed, and in my
haste to do good, I'd already committed The Worst Tomato Sin imaginable.
Come harvest time, to
be truthful, I was really demoralized.
All that work, watering, weeding, caring for and worrying about the weather - and then just a
handful of tomatoes to show for it.
But even tho' it wasn't the success I'd dreamed of, there were still a few tomatoes to be had, and
they were 'all my own work' after all. Well, obviously His work foremostly, but you get my drift.
The silver lining, the best bit of all?
They tasted just fabulous!
Finally I'd found that real flavor once more, what a joy, and it still warms my heart to think back
to that moment when I first sunk my teeth into that freshly washed tomato. Splish! And it brings a
smile to my face, thinking about how hard I had worked, and how comparitively 'little' I had to show
for it.
What a shame that I didn't know then what I'm about to share with you now.
Why do I still smile? Well, the answer's obvious!
Now that I am older and wiser, I don't work so hard (I just work smart), and I get so many tomatoes
(out of fewer plants), that I supply half the neighborhood with my crop, rather than throwing them
away (I can't throw food away, either). It just makes me feel good to know that I really have cracked my own Tomato Code, and now
always have an abundance of fresh, delicious tomatoes, every single season.
